Sergio Perez claimed his second victory of the 2022 F1 season with a calm and collected drive during Sunday night’s Singapore Grand Prix, fending off Charles Leclerc from start to finish.
Having jumped ahead of pole-sitter Leclerc when the lights went out, Perez maintained position for the remaining laps as an initially wet encounter turned dry – though he was investigated for a potential Safety Car infringement.
Behind, Carlos Sainz rounded out the podium finishers after Lewis Hamilton’s attack ended with a trip to the barriers, while Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo gave McLaren a very welcome points haul in P4 and P5, moving them ahead of Alpine in the constructors’ standings.
Max Verstappen finished seventh – overtaking Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel in the closing minutes – on what was a challenging evening for the reigning world champion, whose title celebrations are on hold for now.
A long list of retirements included both Alpine drivers – Fernando Alonso unable to mark his 350th race start with a special result – both Williams drivers, AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda and Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu.
