FORMULA 2: De Vries dominates qualifying in Belgium to take pole position

Nyck de Vries followed up his phenomenal free practice form with another dominant showing in Spa, earning pole position in a red flag-disrupted qualifying session.
The Dutchman kept his cool in scorching hot temperatures to lap the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps ahead of Sergio Sette Camara and Jack Aitken, setting himself up for what would be a fourth win of the campaign in Saturday’s Feature Race.
The morning’s Formula 2 free practice session had suggested that the ART Grand Prix man and his title rival Nicholas Latifi would pick up their battle from Round Eight. The DAMS driver – fresh from driving Williams' F1 car – had lapped just three-tenths slower than De Vries for P2 and looked set to carry that form into qualifying. The Williams F1 test driver struggled for pace, however, and will start the Feature Race from 11th after a difficult session.
Unlike his title challenger, De Vries held up his end of the bargain and looked set to be joined on the front row by Nobuharu Matsushita, until Sean Gelael slid off the track and slammed into the wall. This ended the session early for much of the grid, but Sette Camara and Aitken managed to post their times ahead of the red flag and snatch second and third, behind the Dutchman.
