FORMULA 2: Matsushita pounces late-on for first feature race victory

A late show from Nobuharu Matsushita earned the Japanese driver his first ever Feature Race win in FIA Formula 2, at the Red Bull Ring. He stole victory from the clutches of Nyck de Vries, who succumbed to tyre degradation in the final five laps and dropped to third, behind the Carlin man and Luca Ghiotto.
The Championship leader had appeared immense in qualifying and looked set to claim his fourth win of the campaign with another commanding performance. Opting to start on the Super Soft tyre, the Dutchman pitted on lap 7 and despite re-joining in seventh, impressively diced his way back to first before those on the opposite strategy pitted themselves.
The ART Grand Prix driver’s tyres took a battering in his desire to return to the front of the field and this presented Matsushita with an opening, which the Carlin driver gladly took at Turn 1 on lap 35, easing past the Dutchman with Luca Ghiotto in tow. There would be no reaction from the Championship leader, who settled for third behind Matsushita and Ghiotto.
