HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from FP1 in Japan as Russell leads Antonelli
Mercedes continued its strong start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, as George Russell and Kimi Antonelli topped the times at Suzuka in Free Practice 1.
George Russell set the fastest time in Free Practice 1 for the Japanese Grand Prix, the Mercedes driver leading team mate Kimi Antonelli.
The Briton posted a 1m 31.666s using Pirelli's soft tyre, finishing 0.025s clear of Antonelli after the opening hour of practice at the Suzuka International Circuit.
The Mercedes duo led reigning World Champion Lando Norris and the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri, as the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed the top six.
Elsewhere, there was a coming together between the Williams of Alex Albon and Cadillac's Sergio Perez in the final chicane, with the incident set to be investigated after the session.
