Max Verstappen led from start to finish as he won the Spanish Grand Prix, bagging the fastest lap along the way. The drivers’ championship leader was the star of the show over the weekend in Barcelona, but there were overtakes galore down the order.
It was also a performance to be proud of for Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton took second, while George Russell rose from 12th on the grid to take third. Sergio Perez also recovered well from an 11th-placed start to come home in fourth.
Aston Martin, and Fernando Alonso in particular, had been one of the stories of the season so far but he couldn’t deliver a finish to match what had come before – with the home favourite finishing P7 while his team mate Lance Stroll was a place above in P6. That saw the team drop into third place in the constructors’ championship with Mercedes moving ahead into second.
Despite a front row start Carlos Sainz, the other home favourite, could only take fifth place in his Ferrari.
