Sainz set for 10-place grid penalty in France after taking new engine component

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz is set to take a 10-place grid penalty for the French Grand Prix as he has exceeded his allocation of control electronics.

Sainz's Ferrari came to a fiery halt in Austria as the Spaniard was challenging Max Verstappen for P2, and ahead of this weekend's action in France he said that Ferrari were considering changing his power unit.

He will take a 10-place grid penalty as the Scuderia have fitted a third control electronics (CE), exceeding his allocation of two for the season. He has also taken his second of two allowed energy stores.

Ferrari may opt to fit more power unit components to the Spaniard's car – which might trigger extra grid penalties for the French Grand Prix – as the weekend progresses.

Meanwhile, Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton has taken his third turbocharger, third MGU-H, second energy store (ES) and second control electronics of the season in France – the maximum allocation he is allowed of each part before grid penalties are applied.

Team mate George Russell has taken a second ES and second CE, Zhou Guanyu has taken a second ES, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen and McLaren's Lando Norris have each been fitted with their fourth of eight allocated exhausts.
