WATCH: Norris’s emotional radio message after his maiden podium – and McLaren’s joyous reaction
Lando Norris brought home his first ever Formula 1 podium – and the second McLaren have scored in the last three races – at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix season opener.
Having impressed all weekend, first with his best ever qualifying on Saturday and then with a strong performance in the early part of Sunday’s race, Norris then stepped up to the huge task in the final laps of getting close enough to Lewis Hamilton to benefit from the Mercedes driver’s five second penalty for colliding with Alex Albon.
With the laps ticking down, Norris put pedal to the metal – and as he passed the chequered flag 4.8s adrift of Hamilton, his McLaren team garage exploded into raptures, with Norris having done enough to secure his maiden F1 podium.
