Red Bull’s Max Verstappen followed up his Sprint race win by storming to pole position during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, getting the better of team mate Sergio Perez and Aston Martin rival Fernando Alonso in the final shootout.
Verstappen had to settle for fourth at the end of a rain-hit Sprint Qualifying session but proved the class of the field amid dry conditions at the Shanghai International Circuit on Saturday, culminating in his run to pole.

Verstappen’s best Q3 time of 1m 33.660s put him a couple of tenths up on Perez, with Alonso a tenth-and-a-half further back in third, as drivers now turn their attentions to Sunday’s 56-lap encounter.
